Forgive Student Loan Debt: Five Years On | The Nation

Sadly, neither Congress nor the White House took this proposal seriously, and to be honest, it was written with tongue firmly planted in cheek; however, what I had written had the unexpected consequence of helping spark a true grassroots movement that continues to this day. Within weeks of the essay, dozens of publications and news outlets were reporting on the proposal, with BusinessWeek dubbing me a spokesman for a generation of people with student loan debt. It was a role I never sought but one I proudly assumed out of a sense of civic duty. Over time, I used my new political clout to work with former Representative Hansen Clarke in crafting HR 4170, The Student Loan Forgiveness Act of 2012. The petition I created in support of that legislation garnered nearly 1.2 million signatures, and Representative Clarke and I presented that petition to congressional leadership at a press conference on Capitol Hill. During the course of my advocacy on student debt, I met some incredible activists and organizers. Wanting to expand the reach of my advocacy, I teamed up with Natalia Abrams, Kyle McCarthy and Aaron Calafato to form StudentDebtCrisis.org . Together, we at StudentDebtCrisis.org have continued to advocate for the more than 40 million Americans who collectively owe more than $1.2 trillion in student loan debt.

Can Obama Help Democrats Keep The Senate?

Abu-Jamal was convicted of the 1981 killing of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. Adegbile was asked about the case during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week and replied, “It’s important, I think, to understand that in no way does that legal representation, zealously as an advocate, cast any aspersion or look past the grievous loss of Sergeant Faulkner.” His critics, including Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., disagree. According to Fitzpatrick, “[Abu-Jamal’s] attorneys … attended a rally in Philadelphia and said that they could not have been prouder than to have had the opportunity not to represent justice, not to fight for the Constitution, but to represent Mumia Abu-Jamal.” Faulkner’s widow, Maureen, says she is “outraged” by Obamas decision to nominate Adegbile to such an important post. “To have a man who defended a murderer, someone who murdered a police officer with premeditation and malice, is a radical, is a Black Panther, and to give him an appointment, to nominate him, to the Department of Justice, I mean it’s a disgrace.” Adegbile is senior counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee, where chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., praised his “calm demeanor” and ability to “build consensus.” Leahy added, “He is a careful lawyer and good listener.” Dozens of organizations, led by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, penned a letter of support to the Senate as well – calling Adegbile “a tireless advocate, a skilled litigator, and a well-respected member of the legal community who is extraordinarily qualified for and suited to this position.” At the same time, Ed Whelan, President of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, contends there are questions about president Obama student loan relief Adegbile’s qualifications.

Gary Toebben, chief executive of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, of which Contreras-Sweet is a member, said she has the right experience to help small businesses prosper. “In her business as chair of Proamerica Bank she was in contact with numerous small businesses every day, businesses that have financial needs and need other kinds of advice,” Toebben said. “That gives her a really hands-on understanding of the small business community and the challenges and opportunities they face.” Contreras-Sweet was also president and co-founder of Fortius Holdings, a private equity firm that provided capital to small California businesses. As a member of the California Gov. Gray Davis’ Cabinet Contreras-Sweet was secretary of the California Department of Business, Transportation and Housing Agency from 1999 to 2003 she oversaw a department of 40,000 employees that operated on a $12-billion budget.

Obama to push manufacturing, economic agenda in North Carolina

Regrouping at the start of a busy election year, Obama also encouraged Democrats to coalesce behind a proposed minimum wage hike as a cornerstone of the party’s economic message to voters. An evening session in the East Room of the White House offered Obama an opportunity to deliver a message privately and in person that his administration has been making publicly for weeks: Give budding negotiations with Tehran time to play out before turning the screw further. A six-month deal between Iran and world powers takes effect next week, but prominent senators in both parties have balked at the deal and want even tougher sanctions. “The president did speak passionately about how we have to seize this opportunity,” Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., said. “If Iran isn’t willing in the end to make the decisions that are necessary to make it work, he’ll be ready to sign the bill to tighten those sanctions.

Forex Market Forecast: The Top Themes For 2014

The toning down of the Eurozone crisis and increasing economic confidence all played a supportive role. Even the peripheral Eurozone countries are showing signs of improvement, which is crucial to the long-term survival of the EUR. However, the Eurozone is still a laggard in terms of generating an economic recovery. So while the Fed is reversing its easy money policies, the European Central Bank will still be in aggressive monetary stimulus mode. But a strong US economy will be like manna from heaven for the Eurozone, which should start noticeably recovering by H2. A strong US recovery does therefore limit downside risks for EUR/USD.
